Supreme Court Notice To Bengal, Tamil Nadu Over 'The Kerala Story'

Why ought West Bengal to prohibit the film? It is active throughout the rest of the nation, even in states with comparable demographics, yet nothing has happened. The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, and Justice PS Narasimha made this observation and sent letters to the states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. "This has nothing to do with the artistic value of the film," they said.

Although the film has not been outlawed in Tamil Nadu, cinema owners have chosen not to show it due to law and order issues, which the filmmakers have referred to as a "de facto ban."

Senior attorney Abhishek Singhvi, who was representing the West Bengal administration, said there would be a law and order issue by citing intelligence inputs.

The court also inquired as to the level of protection offered to Tamil Nadu venues showing the film. The government cannot remain silent when cinemas are assaulted, it informed the state's attorney.

It has been scheduled for next Wednesday.

The Kerala Story, which is now playing without incident across the rest of the country, was recently banned in West Bengal. The Supreme Court today asked why this was the case.

The opposition said that the Sudipto Sen film's assertion that 32,000 women in Kerala were coerced into joining ISIS and converting to Islam was incorrect, which caused controversy.

'The Kerala Story' was first outlawed in West Bengal. The administration announced its decision to ban the movie's screening on Monday, citing the need to prevent "any incident of hatred or violence to maintain law and order in the state."

The movie's creators had appealed the Bengal ban to the Supreme Court on the grounds that they were losing money daily.

The film, according to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is intended to malign Kerala and its citizens. She also criticised the BJP for "creating communal politics".

Produced by Vipul Shah, "The Kerala Story" describes how a group of women were purportedly coerced into becoming Muslims and recruited by the ISIS terrorist organisation.

The movie stirred a political storm with the Opposition parties alleging that 32,000 women joining ISIS is an exaggerated figure.

While the film encountered challenges in places where the opposition was in power, BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh gave it tax breaks.
